Federer? Roger that!

Wimbledon is getting ready to host yet another tennis championship. Last year, the finals saw Bjorn Borg congratulate Roger Federer as he tied Borg's record of five consecutive titles at Wimbledon. If Federer were to win this year, he would have done something that even Pete Sampras did not do. Sampras, as many might know, had seven Wimbledon titles between 1993 and 2000. Richard Krajicek, won the 1996, thereby disallowing Sampras to have a consecutive streak.

Will Federer be able to do what Sampras was unable to do? (Of course he has already done something that Sampras could never do - play at the French Open finals! Sampras' best effort in French Open was a semi final berth in 1998; Federer, on the other hand, has played 3 consecutive finals, as of this year, albeit losing them all to Rafael "Clay King" Nadal.)

I'm sure Federer will become the first man in the Open era to win 6 consecutive championships at Wimbledon and join William Renshaw as one of only two men to have ever done so.

Apparently there have been more questions about Federer winning this year than there have been in the past. Did he win any tournament this year at all? And a lot of the "pundits" (the fake ones, who do not comment on this blog!) are making a big deal of Nadal's whitewash of Federer in the French finals.
BTW, even Bjorn Borg seems to favor Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic ahead of Federer. Wishful thinking?

They would be the Sean Salisburys of the Tennis World.

Probably Borg sees quite a bit of himself in Nadal because of his slug-it-out-from-baseline style. I think it's more wishful thinking on Borg's part than anything. Afterall, he's about to be supplanted by Federer for consecutive titles won in the Open era.

Here's an interesting thought! Federer and Nadal put together could do what Borg did by himself at Wimbledon and French Open!
When you put Borg's achievements in perspective, you cannot but appreciate what he did (and for such a long time at the two venues).
Is Agassi the only one since Borg to have won at the French Open and Wimbledon?

Yes, Aggassi is the only one to do a Borg. The others to have come close are Lendl and Courier who both won the French but not Wimbledon, McEnroe & Edberg who won Wimbledon titles and played in the finals of the French Open. BTW, McEnroe was up two sets to nothing against Lendl before losing !! Ofcourse, Federer and Nadal are the other two in this list. I think Nadal may seem more of a favorite to win the Wimbledon than Federer ever will be at Roland Garros. What do you think?
