Katerina Emmons won the 10m air rifle event. It had been assumed the Chinese would dominate this event. They were such odds-on favorites to finish 1-2 at this event that the organizers had desginated this as the first medal event of the Olympics. Emmons of the Czech Republic had other ideas. Ironically the hosts didnt even win a bronze in this event.
China has consistently upped it's medal tally from the previous edition in each of the last 4 Olymics. At Athens they finished second (per the tally of Gold medals won). My money is on China to finish at the top when all's said and done at these games. Punditsez 'Ugly American finis second' (see post below for the Ugly American).
