Ian Bell was out for 199 against South Africa at Lord's in the first test. According to the commentary it's the 8th instance of a 199 (out or n.o) in tests and these are the batsmen that have done it - Mudassar Nazar, M Azharuddin, MTG Elliot, ST Jayasuriya, SR Waugh, A Flower {199 not out}, Younis Khan and now Bell.
I remember Mudassar Nazar's 199 - it came against India back in 1984 (I think Qasim Omar made a 200 in the same test). But if you notice the list, all the other 199s have followed Mudassar's thus making Mudassar the first to get out on 199 in tests. I find it very quirky that it took almost 100 years of test cricket before such a dubious record was established. And only one-fourth the time for another 7 batsmen to join the list !!

And I remember Azhar's! I believe it was against SL and he was out lbw to one of the Ratnayakes! Anyway, that is indeed an interesting stat. But I wonder if the number of double centurions has also spiked over the last few years. And if that might have something to do with this. In other words because there were fewer people near that milestone you had fewer instances of 199s then ...
Yes, it was Ravi Ratnayake that took Azhar's wicket. BTW, had Azhar made it that would have been the first 200 by an Indian that I'd have seen. (I listened when Sunny made 236* at Madras against the WI).
That was a fun match for India - they got their then highest score of 674. Sunny made 175 and was awarded an LML Vespa for MOM. Kapil joined in the fun late in the innings. He obliged the Kanpur crowd who were asking for a six by spanking a few and even batted left-handed. Finally it all ended when Azza was trapped in front by Ravi Ratnayake.
Yes, I vividly remember the glorious days of "tame draws"!
